HEAD OF ACCOUNTING
MPG is a diversified cooperative serving the needs of agricultural and resource-based industries in our surrounding communities since 1932. We are seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Head of Accounting to join our team.
The Head of Accounting is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations of the cooperative. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and provides financial information to the General Manager and the Board of Directors to support decision-making. The position plays a key role in managing inventory accounting, cost controls, and margin analysis across farm equipment sales and lubricant distribution.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting in accordance with accepted accounting standards.
- Present financial results to the General Manager and the Board of Directors
- Monitor budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
Accounting Operations
- Manage day-to-day accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
- Maintain and improve accounting systems and processes
Inventory & Cost Accounting
- Oversee inventory accounting for:
- Farm equipment (including floor plan financing, depreciation, and margin tracking)
- Bulk and packaged lubricants (including cost layering, shrinkage, and logistics costs)
- Ensure accurate valuation and reconciliation of inventory
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls and financial policies
- Ensure compliance with tax regulations, cooperative regulations, and audit requirements
- Coordinate annual audits and liaise with external auditors
Cash Flow & Financing
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and credit facilities
- Oversee financing arrangements (including inventory/floor plan financing if applicable)
- Monitor working capital and liquidity
Preferred Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles
- Experience in inventory-heavy environments (agriculture, retail, distribution, or manufacturing preferred)
- Strong knowledge of cost accounting and inventory management
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- High level of integrity and attention to detail
- Leadership and team development capabilities
- Effective communication with both financial and non-financial shareholders
- Proficiency in accounting software and Excel
